Humility and Service
by Pastor Keith | August 26, 2014
Thanks for visiting the Sloan Canyon Church and School website!
I've been a Pastor for 32 years but I have recently renewed my commitment of service to others. I've always seen my role as one of service and not as a lord over God's flock. But, I'm currently preaching a series of messages from Phillipians and the words of the Apostle Paul in chapter 2 have really challenged me.
“Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus,” Phillipians 2:3-5 HCSB
Making our attitudes like the attitude of Christ Jesus has to be the greatest challenge we're given in all Scripture. As Paul continues in chapter 2 he writes about how Jesus condescended, emptied Himself of all concern for Himself and assumed the form of a slave and took on the likeness of men. Then as a man He humbled Himself to die on the cross for our sins. In a sense He came down to our level in order to lift us up to His!
That's what really challenged me! I don't have to stoop to be on the level of others, I'm down here where we all are. But my responsibility as a Pastor is never to look down on others but to get beneath them and lift them up! That's what I've renewed my commitment to do. But as I think about it, that is not only my responsibility as a Pastor, but first as a Christian! Paul is saying that we should all be getting down to lift one another up! The attitude of Christ Jesus is the challenge to all of us!
If I can help lift you up to be all that Christ Jesus wants you to be, please come to one of our services or stop by my office at the church and let me know how I can be your servant for Christ Jesus' sake!
